The Future of the Business Operating System

About This Session

Abstract

Ninety-three percent of Canadian business leaders use or pilot AI. Only two percent report measurable returns. The tools are not the problem.

Most businesses are stuck in the same pattern: AI use that is individual, informal, and invisible to the organization — one employee here, a tool there, no shared processes, no coordination across teams. That is disruption without direction.

The shift that actually moves the needle is treating AI adoption as a change to the operating model itself: moving from scattered tools and siloed habits toward a connected system with AI at the centre. This session maps the three stages most businesses move through — shadow AI, individual enablement, and departmental optimization — and what it takes to get from one to the next.

It draws on a real implementation at a fractional finance firm that went from 200+ overdue tasks and entirely ad hoc AI use to a fully functioning operating cadence in under three weeks. Attendees leave with a framework to place their own organization on the map.

Key Takeaways

1. An AI maturity framework, including what’s actually required to move to the next stage

2. A ground-level case study: one team went from 200+ overdue tasks and scattered AI use to a working operating cadence in three weeks

3. A forward-looking view of where agents fit, what new workflow-based roles are emerging, and how to think about operating model evolution over the next one to two years
